The scratchies would make up for any sins, and even protect this man from being outright laughed at for his panic as Salem was effectively distracted from his incredible power to startle. Two of his greatest joys in his tiny, cat life, and all at once! The guy wasn't making it sound like he had a much bigger life himself, which ultimately was another point in his favour. It was nice to not be the most pathetic person in the room.
