I'm not sure how it works, to be quite honest. I've just had to accept that it does and get used to the way things are here. You, at least, are lucky. You have someone from Westeros to help you. Tyrion didn't when he came and he had to figure it out all on his own.

( Sansa, too, had an easier time because of Tyrion's knowledge of the Fleet. It had prepared them both for being here in Temba. Now Daenerys was coming here to a land she's never seen before and Sansa and Tyrion have the advantage of her. She's professed to not even know her so clearly this isn't the Daenerys hell bent on destroying the world she intended to save. )
