TEST DRIVE
Application FAQ | Taken Characters | Reserves | Application

Welcome to the first Test Drive for The Revival Project!

For those who do not know, this game is a spin-off from The Drift Fleet game, which is shortly closing. For more information about what this game is about, please check out the FAQ here or the premise here.

The TDM for the first round of applications is NOT required but is highly recommended. Really this is to see the interest level in the game as well as to have everyone interact on the new planet and with the new experiences offered here. There will be a post in the TDM where questions can be asked regarding the prompts/settings. We're keeping this loose though so go ahead and have fun with it. Any questions about the game please direct to the comment section of the FAQ.

If you are a Drift Fleet alumni, please label your character as 'DFAU' on your top level so we know. Also, keep in mind you have complete flexibility on how your character comes here. They could be taken before endgame, after endgame, two years after, one year before, etc. It's up to you! The only option not allowed is to completely restart your character (because then it's not DFAU, is it?)

So go! Explore Agra 10! And, as always, HAVE FUN!

*ATTENTION! RESERVES ARE NOW OPEN!*
*ATTENTION! APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN!*
*GAME OPENS AUGUST 19th!*

WHALE COMB PARTY

In the square near your arrival point, one building seems to be in fairly good repair. It’s large and stark white on every wall. Unlike the other buildings, all the lights are on and the windows looking out are intact. That alone would make it remarkable but it’s hardly the most noticeable thing once you step inside the open doorway.

Hanging against one wall is a piece of fabric that has ‘WHALE COMB!’ painted on it in drippy, fluorescent pink letters. A smiley is painted underneath it right on the wall with three eyes and long fangs. The fangs drip down all the way to the floor and the eyes are just a blob of paint, but whoever left it seems to have been trying, here. ‘US THANK THEY!’ is written beside it, barely legible. On every other wall is ‘EAT’ in various sizes and colors. They thankfully don’t drip as much as the smiley since, beneath them, are tables upon tables of food.

There are meats, fruits, root vegetables, and even what might be a sweet dessert of some sort as well. Bowls are full of them, apparently a welcome dinner for the Agrii’s new heroes. At the very least it will give everyone a quick crash course on what is edible around here. But some of it might have … adverse effects:

- People chomping down on the striped meat all seem to get very drowsy a few minutes later.
- The red fruit that looks like a giant cherry is the equivalent of a few shots - the more consumed, the more drunken this party is getting.
- There is a bowl of weeds that have small, daisy-like flowers all along the stalks. This tastes like chicken and gives the eater a sudden burst of energy that will have them running around the room like they’re being chased.
-There are a collection of drinks, some made from the red fruit, some that are clearly water, some that taste like a less-sweet lemonade with no effects, and then there's a blue one that tastes like an especially dark beer. People drinking this will find themselves incapable of lying for a half hour.

Of course, no way to know any of this before you chow down. So dig in and enjoy the show!

LOST AND ALONE

They said don’t go into the forest. If the noises there weren’t deterrent enough then the thick trees and lack of paths should have been. Yes, you’ll need food. Yes, both meat and many fruits are in the forest. But maybe you should have gotten some more information before heading in.

Congratulations: you went into the forest and are now lost. You can’t hear the murmurings from town, nor can you see any of the lights that might be flickering on and off in the city. How are you going to get back into town? How do you make sure that the creatures here don’t attack you? You probably don’t have any weapons, so you’d better figure something out quick.

Or, maybe you’ll get lucky and run into another foolish person wandering around out here. Try not to attack them - unless they attack first.

MILES TO GO

The first thing every survivor needs to find is shelter. Not long after your arrival at the fountain, it’s getting darker now and, even if the night is short (you’re about to find out it’s not!), you don’t want to spend your first one out on an unfamiliar street. Distantly you can hear a sound like a wolf howling through an elephant’s trunk. It’s loud and alien. Maybe you want to find somewhere to sleep a little more quickly.

Right away there are two pretty solid options that will do nicely for the night: an abandoned hotel-like structure and some empty stores.

The hotel structure seems to be the most popular option for others. Its large, overgrown lobby leads you to the staircase and over a dozen floors of rooms in varying conditions. Despite it looking as though no one has set foot in here for decades, the stairs and floors all are secure. The rooms that have doors on them open up to dusty rooms that all have a bathroom (of sorts) attached and long, narrow bed frames. Figuring out a mattress will be a challenge but at least this is a safe place to sleep. As long as no animals laid claim to this room before you got in...

But let’s say the room in the hotel doesn’t work for you. Maybe the room is too small for you. Maybe you don’t like the stairs. Maybe you want someplace private to separate yourself from the rest of these strangers and to think quietly about what to do next. Either way, the other option is any number of abandoned stores lining the block where you arrived. The glass doors and windows of many are broken but there are just as many intact as well. The rooms are all large and empty, as whatever wares inside were either taken or dissolved over the years. There may be a counter or two that will get you off the ground, though. With all this space, you’re bound to find something to sleep on.

Unless someone else got there, first...

Isabella took it. "Isabella Trent, lately of the city of Falchester in the nation of Scirland." She also noted that wherever Delta was from, they didn't apparently use surnames.

"What are electronics?" She can pick at the etymology, and had some knowledge of the physical sciences... something to do with electric charge, perhaps? A fascinating area of research it seemed, but so far practical applications were not common.

"IS that a play on words, and if so, should I be concerned?" Because it does sound like 'welcome', but why would you use 'whale comb' if it wasn't 'welcome and something to do with whales or combs'.

Whale Comb

As far as abductions go, this isn't the worst one Jadzia has ever experienced. She can't reach anyone back on the station or any of the nearby runabouts, which is bad, but no one had tried to kill her yet either, which is good. She can't recall ever having heard of Agra 10 before, and with eight lifetimes' worth of information knocking around in her head, she's fair sure she'd at least have heard mention of the name if it was a Federation planet. Being in uncharted waters without a way to call home is bad, but at least her hosts had the courtesy to throw a little welcoming party, and frankly, the sign inviting her to partake of their foodstuffs s hilarious (if not just the tiniest bit unsettling).

Well, she wouldn't have bothered joining Starfleet if she wasn't interested in learning new things and exploring uncharted places, and this qualifies as both.

With no tricorder to check for contaminants or other harmful chemicals, she settles on performing a quick series pf patch tests on the skin of her hand; while it doesn't immediately melt her flesh off, she also isn't quite prepared to ingest it either. Might as well have a look around in the mean time, she decides. She's not alone here--that much is obvious--and there is strength and safety in numbers. Maybe some of the others who have already arrived will have a better lay of the land.

Lost and Alone

So, maybe exploring in the woods wasn't the best idea. She feels fairly confident that she can defend herself on account of the fact that she arrived with a bat'leth in tow, but the tiniest adversaries tend to be the most dangerous. Aside from the occasional snapping of twigs or rustling in the underbrush, Jadzia can hear the sounds of insects as they flit around her here and there.

Most people wouldn't think much of such a foe, but to her, a bite or a sting can be deadly: every Trill initiate learns very quickly that the toxins found in the venom of many types of insect can block the neurotransmitters that connect them to their symbionts, resulting in paralysis or even death. Every buzz and chirp has her jumping and gripping the bat'leth tighter.

A louder noise alerts her to the fact that she isn't alone, and even though her nerves are frayed, she doesn't lose her cool... until a huge bug lands on her arm, making her lose her concentration entirely as she swats viciously at the blasted thing.

Judging by they way they stare, the fruit is fascinating to Phalanx. The way Delta finds a place to sit is also fascinating. Watching him move and eat is fascinating.

And it gives Phalanx a lot to work with. They're remembering, slowly, as they watch their new friend. They take a seat when instructed, moving just like the other man had. They also follow his cue in taking a bite of fruit.

Their careful following and mimicking is interrupted when the taste of the fruit actually registers, however. Right as they seem like they're about to respond to Delta's advice, a surprised blink cuts it off.

Staring at the fruit in their hand. "It's... not right?"

Some call it that, yes. But I find that "magic" has many meanings, so--to me it is an energy source.

[He smiles a bit.]

Are you familiar with the term golem?

And sometimes you fight for more.

Delta rubs the back of his neck and makes a face. "A domed city called Proles on the planet Zeus, run by a large corporation with unclear motives. They took us from many worlds in hopes we would be immune to the contagion that had caused them to put up a dome in the first place. Although technologically advanced, they allowed us little in the way of freedom. I am glad not to be there any longer."

An open sky over his head and the knowledge that Bifrons isn't out there is well worth having to find his own food and scrape for shelter...at least so far. Delta's opinion might change after a few days, but for now it's a huge relief.

Delta smiled and shook her hand. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Isabella. I cannot say I am familiar with Scirland, but I have met travelers from many different places and have proud to call them friends." Well, some of them, anyway. Others he'd been glad to see the backside of.

He looked a little surprised that she didn't know electronics, but reminded himself that there were plenty of Immune back on Proles that had come from equivalents of what was to him the distant past. "They are devices such as the data point we saw on entry, and appear to have once been vital to the function of this ruined city. Electricity such as from lightning can be stored in a device called a battery and then used to power any number of useful systems, such as heating or cooling buildings. More practically for field research, they can also be used to store vast amounts of information in something the size of a small book."

alaspooryork: (unarmored: um no)

[personal profile] alaspooryork 2019-08-22 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what he'd been afraid of. Delta looks rueful and rubs at the ports on the back of his neck after shaking the other Delta's hand.

"Your...father would be Dr. Church, then." Not a question, but an assumption. "And you were born human?"

[personal profile] alaspooryork 2019-08-22 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Delta doesn't miss the observation and mimicking; it's almost as fascinating to him as his behavior is to Phalanx. There's a mystery here, and no mistake.

He bites back a smile at the surprise, though. "Are you referring to the flavor of the fruit?" Because it really isn't what one would expect to look at it, at least not if they're familiar with what a real persimmon tastes like. But if it's something else that seems not right, he's curious about that as well.
pileofspirits: (magic trick)

[personal profile] pileofspirits 2019-08-22 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The "mm!" that they first respond with at least sounds like an affirmation, so Delta is probably on the right track. Putting the thought into more specific words is a challenge, however.

Phalanx rolls the fruit around and around in their hands--including putting fingers obliviously right into the open spot they'd just bitten out of its skin--inspecting it from every angle.

"Flavor. Taste. Tasting like..." They're concentrating on the words, trying them out as they string them together. "Like. Like... less. Taste like less taste."

He looks pleased at the explanation, in fact. Goodness knows he's worked with systems that were worse at communicating themselves before, even if this is a person and not a system; it's reminiscent of teasing the answer out of a complex mathematical equation.

"You have tasted something that looks similar before, and expect more flavor?"

He doesn't have a lot to compare it to, himself. Fresh food was rare in Proles, and artificial flavors abounded. All he really cares about is that it isn't spicy enough to cause him physical pain (which is any level of spicy, he has terrible tolerance).

"Expect more flavor!" Yes, that's it.

Phalanx looks terribly pleased with how this conversation is going, finding the right words and everything... until they take another bite.

They still look surprised by the taste, but their expression is now shifting more towards dislike, doing more thoughtful chewing than swallowing.

Lost and Alone

Julian too has somehow managed to get lost in the forest. His tricorder seemed to work intermittently and he thought it was best to go searching for herbs that may have some medicinal usage--it might be safer to have those on hand sooner rather than later. Not to mention, it would be useful to categorize local flora and fauna for later. He could figure out what is and isn't safe to eat, maybe see if certain plants are poisonous to predators...but his tricorder doesn't want to cooperate once he's far enough into the woods not to know his way back without it.

Of course.

He's distracted by the tricorder itself, turning it over, trying to figure out what happened to make it stop working again when.... he gets walloped in the head.

"Ow!", he cries as he stumbles backwards into a tree, more surprised than hurt as he brings a hand up to his head. He pulls his hand away, knowing it was a blunt force trauma and yet checking to see if there's blood on it. Of course there's none. Julian looks up to see who his attacker is and god, for the first time since getting here, he feels a flash of hope.

"Jadzia?"

Several things happen at once. Jadzia's counterattack on the insect that... well, it just landed on her, but she's not taking chances. In any case, she's fair certain it's dead, but her distraction had her stumbling, the blunt edge of her bat'leth meeting something very solid. Something--or someone--with a very familiar voice.

Dropping the blade down into a safe hold, she spins to face Julian, confirming that her ears hadn't mistaken her a moment before. Relief lights up her face.

"Julian!"

She's not ashamed to hug him, wrapping one arm around his thin body to pull him into a tight embrace. After a moment, she releases him, examining his face. There's no mistaking that boyish grin, or the clean, subtle scent of the aftershave he uses. Taking a half step back to give him room to breathe, she sets her hand on his shoulder and squeezes it.

"I'd ask how you got here, but I imagine it's the same way I did. I can't tell you how relieved I am to see you."

His father? Born human? Both of those have Delta looking in confusion at the other, well, maybe not person? No, definitely a person, but not human? Okay, he's a touch confused right now.

"Our family doesn't know who our father is. Until a few years back the Counselor, we knew he worked for our father, managed us, but we've never met our parents."

He doesn't even know Church as in Alpha, never met the man. Only re-found Beta.

Jadzia looks even more beautiful than usual in his relief. He's positively grinning ear to ear. This whole situation somehow seems less cumbersome with her here. Her and her 300+ years of experience and knowledge.

"Same, honestly. I've no clue where we are and my tricorder doesn't seem to want to work consistently," he holds it up in demonstration. He looks around.

"All of that aside, I'm...not exactly sure where we are right now in the context of where we arrived. I've been trying to leave this area for the past--" a consultation with his internal clock-- "at least half an hour." Thirty two minutes and fifty three seconds to be precise.

Being on an unknown planet means that navigating with the local landmarks or even the position of the sun in the sky is a rather pointless effort without a lot more data to go by. The two of them might be brilliant and decorated Starfleet officers, but that doesn't make them survivalists as well.

On the other hand, they are brilliant and decorated Starfleet officers, so the fact that they're both lost in the woods without their electronics to point them in the right direction is funny in an ironic sort of way. Audrid Dax had enjoyed taking walks in the cool woods, but that didn't exactly help them now. These woods were very different than those on the Trill homeworld.

"We might want to start by finding a water source," she says with contemplative lilt to her voice. "Which direction did you come from? And..." In her pleasure and surprise at meeting him so unexpectedly, Jadzia completely forgot that she'd clobbered poor Julian on the head. "Here, let me have a look at your scalp. Did I hit you very hard?" Her hand moves from his shoulder and she urges him to bow his head so she can check for her self and ascertain he's all right.

"Truly?" Delta looks surprised at that - the Director hadn't hesitated to claim all the AIs as his own creations in his own world, but perhaps there are more layers to it where the other Delta is from. "In many ways that may be superior. I am not fond of my creator."

Although--hm. He wonders if that means the siblings don't count Carolina as one of their number. Feeling his way around her until he solidly defined her as his sister was one of the more satisfying things Delta had accomplished.

And then he grimaces and splays his hands over his chest. "I will also note that this is not my original form. Before I came under the control of a corporation called Bifrons, I was an intelligence program." Well, technically he still is, just stuck in a human body.

"Let me see what else is available." Delta rummages through the other foods he's gathered so far and comes up with a handful of different berries. These are at least flavorful, although they're a random assortment.

"Would you like to try some of these instead?"
