TEST DRIVE
Application FAQ | Taken Characters | Reserves | Application

Welcome to the first Test Drive for The Revival Project!

For those who do not know, this game is a spin-off from The Drift Fleet game, which is shortly closing. For more information about what this game is about, please check out the FAQ here or the premise here.

The TDM for the first round of applications is NOT required but is highly recommended. Really this is to see the interest level in the game as well as to have everyone interact on the new planet and with the new experiences offered here. There will be a post in the TDM where questions can be asked regarding the prompts/settings. We're keeping this loose though so go ahead and have fun with it. Any questions about the game please direct to the comment section of the FAQ.

If you are a Drift Fleet alumni, please label your character as 'DFAU' on your top level so we know. Also, keep in mind you have complete flexibility on how your character comes here. They could be taken before endgame, after endgame, two years after, one year before, etc. It's up to you! The only option not allowed is to completely restart your character (because then it's not DFAU, is it?)

So go! Explore Agra 10! And, as always, HAVE FUN!

*ATTENTION! RESERVES ARE NOW OPEN!*
*ATTENTION! APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN!*
*GAME OPENS AUGUST 19th!*

WHALE COMB PARTY

In the square near your arrival point, one building seems to be in fairly good repair. It’s large and stark white on every wall. Unlike the other buildings, all the lights are on and the windows looking out are intact. That alone would make it remarkable but it’s hardly the most noticeable thing once you step inside the open doorway.

Hanging against one wall is a piece of fabric that has ‘WHALE COMB!’ painted on it in drippy, fluorescent pink letters. A smiley is painted underneath it right on the wall with three eyes and long fangs. The fangs drip down all the way to the floor and the eyes are just a blob of paint, but whoever left it seems to have been trying, here. ‘US THANK THEY!’ is written beside it, barely legible. On every other wall is ‘EAT’ in various sizes and colors. They thankfully don’t drip as much as the smiley since, beneath them, are tables upon tables of food.

There are meats, fruits, root vegetables, and even what might be a sweet dessert of some sort as well. Bowls are full of them, apparently a welcome dinner for the Agrii’s new heroes. At the very least it will give everyone a quick crash course on what is edible around here. But some of it might have … adverse effects:

- People chomping down on the striped meat all seem to get very drowsy a few minutes later.
- The red fruit that looks like a giant cherry is the equivalent of a few shots - the more consumed, the more drunken this party is getting.
- There is a bowl of weeds that have small, daisy-like flowers all along the stalks. This tastes like chicken and gives the eater a sudden burst of energy that will have them running around the room like they’re being chased.
-There are a collection of drinks, some made from the red fruit, some that are clearly water, some that taste like a less-sweet lemonade with no effects, and then there's a blue one that tastes like an especially dark beer. People drinking this will find themselves incapable of lying for a half hour.

Of course, no way to know any of this before you chow down. So dig in and enjoy the show!

LOST AND ALONE

They said don’t go into the forest. If the noises there weren’t deterrent enough then the thick trees and lack of paths should have been. Yes, you’ll need food. Yes, both meat and many fruits are in the forest. But maybe you should have gotten some more information before heading in.

Congratulations: you went into the forest and are now lost. You can’t hear the murmurings from town, nor can you see any of the lights that might be flickering on and off in the city. How are you going to get back into town? How do you make sure that the creatures here don’t attack you? You probably don’t have any weapons, so you’d better figure something out quick.

Or, maybe you’ll get lucky and run into another foolish person wandering around out here. Try not to attack them - unless they attack first.

MILES TO GO

The first thing every survivor needs to find is shelter. Not long after your arrival at the fountain, it’s getting darker now and, even if the night is short (you’re about to find out it’s not!), you don’t want to spend your first one out on an unfamiliar street. Distantly you can hear a sound like a wolf howling through an elephant’s trunk. It’s loud and alien. Maybe you want to find somewhere to sleep a little more quickly.

Right away there are two pretty solid options that will do nicely for the night: an abandoned hotel-like structure and some empty stores.

The hotel structure seems to be the most popular option for others. Its large, overgrown lobby leads you to the staircase and over a dozen floors of rooms in varying conditions. Despite it looking as though no one has set foot in here for decades, the stairs and floors all are secure. The rooms that have doors on them open up to dusty rooms that all have a bathroom (of sorts) attached and long, narrow bed frames. Figuring out a mattress will be a challenge but at least this is a safe place to sleep. As long as no animals laid claim to this room before you got in...

But let’s say the room in the hotel doesn’t work for you. Maybe the room is too small for you. Maybe you don’t like the stairs. Maybe you want someplace private to separate yourself from the rest of these strangers and to think quietly about what to do next. Either way, the other option is any number of abandoned stores lining the block where you arrived. The glass doors and windows of many are broken but there are just as many intact as well. The rooms are all large and empty, as whatever wares inside were either taken or dissolved over the years. There may be a counter or two that will get you off the ground, though. With all this space, you’re bound to find something to sleep on.

Unless someone else got there, first...

[He laces his fingers with hers and she can't resist the urge to curl her hands with his. He feels real, the way that his hands shake doesn't deter her, just has her leaning in closer, her hands pressing a little bit tighter against his. She's here, she's okay, and so is he. And everything else? They can work it out.

She trusts Lila and Cooper to be able to call someone and look after Nate. And this isn't a place where she'd want to have to worry about her children. Not with the warning to not go into the forest and energy storms and the sounds she'd heard when she got too close. She thinks Cooper at least would like this part, though. Roughing it in a gutted out hotel on an alien world? Better than they're alone here. Or at least she's pretty sure they're alone; hopes.]

No, you had to. I know, I understand. It's okay.

[She can't imagine it, being left behind. Being there in the sudden solitude and knowing that she'd lost them, how that would tear her apart. So she doesn't blame him from not staying there with their ashes. And he'd saved them, in the end, even if it took years. She doesn't want to take her hands from his so instead she just leans in, tilting her forehead into the side of his neck.

The way his voice cracks breaks her heart a little, the guilt and grief in his eyes, and she wants to take it from him. Give him back something, someone to lean on in the middle of all this chaos. She can almost feel the hurt, and she curls her fingers a little bit tighter against his hands.]

But it is. Honey, I'm here. And we're on an alien planet, so I don't think I'm going anywhere.

[Her tone is more wry than actual humor, but it's a little bit of levity.

[ Carefully, so as not to hurt her by accident, he lifts their intertwined hands so he can press hers against his face. What he needs is close contact so he can be reassured that this is real. It's hard to trust in anything right now, when things like witnessing the people he loves the most disintegrate into ash can actually happen, but the fact that it's been several minutes and she's still standing there with him gives him some small measure of hope.

That gives him a stab of regret, because he told Natasha not to give him hope, but she did anyway, and now he's reclaiming it for himself. But what it cost to get there is insurmountable, and that's one thing he's not sure how to come to terms with. Clearly Laura has no doubts about their ability to see this storm through, but Clint's only half as certain.

Assuming that everything is resolved, and that their children came back unscathed as well, then yes, he believes they'll be all right. Would he rather be there with them? Of course. But they don't seem to have a lot of choice right now. It's a mixed bag, because if they were here too, at least he and Laura could keep an eye on them, but then there's the fact that they don't quite know what they're dealing with. He'd rather die himself than see his children in harm's way. It's bad enough that Laura's here, but he's determined to move mountains to keep her safe. ]

The silence was too much. I kept waiting and hoping for some sign that you'd come back, but there was nothing.

[ Only he knows how many nights he spent pouring out his rage and sadness alone in what had once been their shared bedroom. After that, when he had no more emotions left to give, he packed up some things and left, locking the door behind him, in case something happened and the impossible became possible. He wanted their house to stay safe, to give them somewhere to come back to, if that ever happened. At the time, he hadn't believed it would, but this was their house. He couldn't let anything happen to it.

But now, with her here, nestled in his arms and her head resting against his neck, he feels like he might be able to begin to breathe again. It'll take some time for the hurt to fade, and even longer for him to put the pieces back together again, but with her beside him, he at least hopes that it's possible.

If she can forgive him for the worst things he's done in their years apart, that is. He has to tell her, but how to broach that subject is eluding him. It feels like a conversation for another time, even if he doesn't want to wait too long before telling her.

So, he settles for letting out a dry laugh of his own, a hollow attempt at laughter. ]

I don't think either of us are, but alien planet or not, I'm glad you're with me.

[She breathes just a little bit easier as Clint lifts their entwined hands so that she can hold his face in their joined hands. She can feel him, that reassurance that he's alive, here, warm and something that she can touch, hold onto. When he hadn't picked up the call she'd feared the worst, but he's here, so that's what she holds onto; the truth here in her hands.

She doesn't know what he's done, how he's coped with what happened, but for her part she's sure they can work it out. Her human husband against gods, magic and monsters terrifies her sometimes, makes her scared for him, but she trusts him. Does her best to understand the darkness her carries and ease it where she can.]

It must have been horrible.

[She almost says sorry, but knows that would probably just make it heavier for him. She sees his pain, but he sees their deaths, the loss, failure. She can only imagine what it was like for him. Left alone, without him, with their children gone? Worse than any tomb. Of course he left, but he can only imagine how hard that must have been, accepting that it meant they weren't coming back. So she leans into him, nuzzles a little bit into him, like the proximity can offer them the comfort that they both need. She sort of wishes they were back on the farm with the kids, but maybe they needed the space for a little while. A place where they could make sense of everything that had happened.

His laugh might be hollow, but she'll take it anyway. It's a start. Something to build on. She can work with it. Hold on for as long as they can because she's still just taking in the contact.]

But I'm glad you're here, too. Saving an alien planet is a bit outside of my skillset. But I'm sure we can figure it out together.

[ For his part, his breathing feels constricted, and it feels like his heart is pounding so hard, he doesn't know how she isn't hearing it. He closes his eyes when she takes his face in her hands, and he marvels again about the impossibility of this entire situation. It shouldn't be possible, but there's no ignoring the evidence that's right in front of him. She's real, he's real, and they're together.

There's yet another stab of guilt as his thoughts turn towards their kids, wondering what's happening to them if they're both here. But he hopes that if the theories about alternate realities hold true, then back at home, they're all together and in one piece.

And she's right to be scared; when it comes to gods, monsters, and magic, Clint really can't hope to stack up against them. He knows he doesn't give Laura nearly enough credit for agreeing to be with him while he goes toe-to-toe with such dangerous enemies. It's not for the faint of heart, but she's stuck with him, and that makes him love her more.

But then he shakes his head, not because it wasn't horrible, but because between the two of them, what she went through must have been worse. ]

It must have been horrible for you, too.

[ It's not fair that she and the kids died. It's not at all what he would have ever wanted for them, even if it was entirely out of his control. When she doesn't apologize, he does instead. ]

I'm sorry it happened, and that it took so long to fix it.

[ And beyond that, he's sorry that he tried to die too. The only reason he didn't is because someone every bit as dear to him died in his place. That's another thing he's not certain how to address.

It makes him feel unworthy of her, because he's keeping secrets from her, something he said he'd never do. Of course, there's some classified secrets that he's not at liberty to tell, but the only thing keeping him from telling the truth is his own guilt. Oh, he means to tell her everything in time, but for right now, he can't find a way to put them into words. And in his mind, that just makes him the worst sort of liar and a terrible husband.

He forces himself to look a little less haggard and haunted, putting on his best attempt at a genuine smile just for her benefit as he responds: ]

How hard can it be? You take care of our kids, most of the time by yourself.

[ Something else he feels guilty about. ]

This should be simple in comparison.

[ And she'll have him around too, which he hopes will count for something. ]
