Once is enough. And well, okay, why don't you tell me about what you two do on a day off?

I'll tell you anyway.

I don't get a lot of days off, back home. We have a regular poker game, with Ben and Luke. If it's just the two of us, he wants to train, sometimes I can talk him down to basketball. That was never my sport, but he doesn't have the restraint for tennis. He'll let me take him to museums, I think that's my favourite, he looks so--I think that exhausts him, though. Any of that ringing a bell?

Not really. We don't really get days off, but even if we did, we don't play basketball, and we don't go to museums.

That's a shame, though, 'cause I love museums.

I know you do. You like the MoMA the best, but you're more talkative at the Intrepid. Why don't you go?

When I'm not busy, he's busy.

I like the Met the best, but the MoMA has my favorite painting. Monet's Water Lillies. He painted them at Giverny, during the last years of his life. He'd had cataracts, and that made him see colors differently. He'd had melancholic thoughts about himself as an artist as a result, but somehow, created some of his most celebrated and my personal favorite of his works.

We were alone, together, for a long time--When I made the Mansion the Avengers headquarters, I invited everyone to stay, but he was the only one that really took me up on that at first, so it was just us, and I wanted to badly to help him fall in love with the future. I would hear him get up, every night, and he'd be out looking for Bucky, like if he called his name enough he would be there, downtown New York, a hundred years later. So, I would get him up in the morning, tell him, 'Today we're learning about modern music', and I'd have a hall booked and Coldplay would already be setting up, and I guess we got used to it. The museums.

Anyway, so--sorry, I think I knew that, about the Lilies. Not about Monet, like I said, he wouldn't talk much--but I knew he liked it, we always went back. Maybe I'll give the Met another chance. Why that one?

The Met? 'Cause it's got so much of everything. And it's so peaceful to just sit down in front of all the statues, or the temple, surrounded by the moat, and just, think. Tune out the city. That's how I feel about the Lilies.

When you're there, they're so big that you can't help but feel small, like you're just a- bird, or something, on Monet's window, looking out at the gardens.

Guess I kinda wish we'd both stayed. And maybe I could've shown him the Lilies. I think... after New York, we both needed a break.

That's a lot to work through, you and I have very different experiences of the Met, nine times out of ten I'm there because some wizard has brought the marble to life, it's always there, and I wouldn't call the overall impression peaceful, but--That's what you want, to feel small and quiet?
pursuitofcappiness: (hey did you want to talk)

Well, what can I say? It reminds me of a simpler time.
