[Mini-Event!] Replication Gone Awry!

Lately it has seemed like all the Agrii could do was ask and ask of He Rows, without giving much back in return. Things seem to be changing though, with The Message from An Nu and Ga Re. Once more the He Rows are being given a glimpse into what life might be like for their Agrii hosts, and this time it seems to be something like a harvest festival, or maybe a celebration to gluttony? It can be hard to tell with the word choices.
No matter what the specific details are, it is very clear that Ga Re was making no joke about the replicator being temporarily abducted. What menacing probing may or may not have happened is a mystery, but the morning after it was taken away, the replicator returns, with a new paper sign hung off the side of it, drawn with that lovely, scrawled crayon style that is all Agrii.
If the sign is to be believed, the replicator is upgraded, and does ‘no limit’ really mean you can replicate things to your heart’s content? Perhaps you should go and test it. What’s the worst that can happen?
Oh No. You ended on a question and then right into the FAQ. Okay, we’ll bite. What’s the worst that can happen?
Apparently whoever did the ‘Toon Up’ was not very good with machines. The replicator is now malfunctioning. The good news is that it is actually working without the normal monthly limit of five replications per month. The bad news is that you need to be careful what you ask for, because you might not get just what you’re expecting.
Can we get a refresher on how the replicator works?
You can replicate most items up to the size of an average microwave. If you want to make something bigger, you’ll have to replicate it in parts. Weapons cannot be replicated. If you try, you’ll get a weird, half-melted, misshapen piece of plastic. The replicator will also not make the power crystals that seem to power the city. Many items that are common to Earth and the worlds of Star Trek (as this was gained from a Vulcan in Federation Space) can be replicated just with a verbal request for the item by name, including food, clothing, and common tools. The more complicated an item, or more ‘unique’ it is, the less likely the replication will function, unless extra details are programmed into the machine, which can range from schematics, to chemical compound details, to detailed written descriptions. No items that are magical/fully unique to a canon may be replicated. No animals may be replicated.
So how is it going wrong?
Well, there are any number of ways that a character’s replication requests can go wrong. Here’s just a few ideas off the top of our heads:
-Too many copies of the item are made, up to and including near avalanche proportions
-Clothing might be Agrii sized or have space for extra appendages/limbs
-Food items come out looking perfect and tasting like something else (like peanut butter)
-A completely different item altogether is created
-The item has an unexpected secondary function (a replicated pen also serves as a mood ring, or your shoe is also a music box)
-Everything SEEMS completely normal, but it turns out the item glows in the dark/fluoresces under moonlight/is magnetic
You are of course not limited to only these mishaps. The sky's the limit here. But if you’re not sure with an idea, please ask us below and we’ll let you know if it sounds possible.
How long will these malfunctions last?
The replicator will return on the morning of Monday, November 7th. The replicator will continue its strange malfunctions for one week from its return. Then, on Monday, November 14th it will make a series of clicks, whistles, and sounds like a cat bringing up a hairball, before the lights shut down and smoke pours from the machine.
Oh no! Can we repair the replicator?
Of course. Anyone with the Engineering datapoint would be able to make repairs to the system. There will need to be some crystals replaced inside, using new but uncharged energy crystals, as well as some wires that will need replaced (and aren’t you lucky, one of the random glitches would have put out just the right ones). It won’t take more than a day. If someone would like their character to be responsible for the final repair, let us know below and we’ll do an RNG if there are multiple takers.
Can we stop the glitches before then?
Nope. The machine, no matter what any He Row may do, will just have to be glitchy for a week. Whether that’s something to enjoy or tremble over is up to you.
