This game is a spin-off from the closed The Drift Fleet game. For more information about the game, including more details on the setting, please check out the FAQ here or the premise here.

A thread on the TDM will be required for all applications. Please view the FAQ for information about how this works. Any questions about the game please direct to the comment section of the FAQ as well.

If you are a Drift Fleet alumni bringing your character from the game, please label your character as 'DFAU' on your top level. Also, keep in mind you have complete flexibility on how your character comes here. They could be taken before endgame, after endgame, two years after, one year before, etc. It's up to you! If you want to completely restart your character, they're not considered DFAU anymore and won't need the label.

Fall in Temba and Sh'Ka

Fall is a season that, in temperate climates like that of Temba and Sh'Ka leads to great changes in the land. Of course in both cities that change is often peeking out amid the occasional dustings or drifts of volcanic ash, but with each of the light fall rains, it's almost as if the memories of the eruption that ended the summer are being washed away. Each city, though, has its own new challenges to face.

Temba seems almost peaceful, breathing out a sigh of relief after its near destruction. Just southeast of the city one finds signs of the damage in greater evidence. The recent lava flows have taken out large stretches of vegetation, replacing them with fresh volcanic rock left bare at the surface. In some places there's even residual heat given off, especially closer to the volcano that now rests as an unending reminder of what was nearly lost. Meanwhile in the city itself the plants that would normally provide a natural abundance outside of the domain of the greenhouse seem to offer scant pickings, perhaps a result of the intense heat of the summer.

Meanwhile in Sh'Ka fall proves to be a threat, though in a new way this year than in any before. The danger derives from the Blood Vines near the train station. Apparently ash-rich soil only feeds the vampiric plant, and its spines are larger than ever as its vines lie hidden under the mounds of ash, ready for any unsuspecting prey.

Explore ~~the city~~ Temba!

Here's a map of Temba and a bit more description of some of the buildings here.

Despite having been protected from being destroyed by the volcano itself and unlike Sh'Ka not having been buried in vast amopunts of ash, Temba still suffered notable damage from the earthquakes that came with the volcano's eruption. Previously restored buildings were damaged and others entirely caved in on themselves leaving them beyond any hope for restoration. The streets and paths are even worse to traverse than they used to be but for what it's worth water and electricity are still working. Most of the time.

Needless to say, exploring is more risky these days as buildings may still cave in without warning and seemingly solid roads may crack open to drop anunsuspecting wanderer into underground caves left behind by the quakes.

And yet the city can still be explored. If you are lucky, you might even stumble over The Deep End, the bar located on one of the mid-levels of the tower residences in one of the residence towers. Unfortunately no bright neon signs can lead you there, but it does exist.

Now what's happening with the hangar?!

A while ago, the ships vanished from the hangar and as of now no one can say why exactly that happened. Now your character may snotice that the map still indicates a hangar, but going there has them walk straight into- A force field? And a massive one at that. It's notably larger than the hangar building used to be and by no means translucent. Instead, your character will see a reflection of the city around. Or much rather the rubble and empty area around the location. What's going on here? Do you investigate the strange case of the missing space ships and now also missing hangar?

Try the network!

The network is back up! Upon arrival, your character will have on their person a small, handheld communications device. Maybe they know exactly how to use a computer, smartphone, or tablet, and immediately blast out a text or video trying to figure out what's going on. Or maybe they're not so tech-savvy after all, and everyone is about to get a lovely shot right up your character's left nostril.

There be storms...

These power-altering storms keep ravaging parts of the planet every once in a while. No one truly knows where they come from or what to do about them yet, but one of them appears to be approaching. You have the option to find shelter in one of the buildings to wait for it to pass. Unless, of course, you rather feel drawn to investigate.

Should you step inside the storm, or even get lost in it, it will show ghosts of people you know and those you don't. It drains you of any super-human abilities and tries its best to keep you from getting to its origin. Are you going to try anyways? Or are you going to chase the whispers of people from your past? Maybe you will simply find yourself calling for help or stumble across another lost soul in need of assistance.

You're welcome to use any previous test drive scenarios or previous game events as a basis for a thread/situation, or simply make up your own! Keep in mind that you're currently stranded on a planet with only basic necessities, but there is enough food and fresh water. Creature comforts, however, seem to be distinctly lacking. Quite unlike a gathering of potentially dangerous creatures to encounter. The setting is yours to explore and have fun with!

Later on, Max would really to Google things as well. Or at least ask an entity that can't judge a whole lot of questions about trauma.

At least with Max, she can see through tough acts and posturing. If Kavinsky ever falls on that after she gets to know him, she will just call him out on it.

Luckily for them both, Max was pretty clever and picked most of it up, quickly. Some of it seemed intuitive, once she knew what was for what.

She shrugged at the end of the explanation.

"It's not that hard."

That was part of the beauty of Google; not being judged for whatever shit you looked up. And besides that, Kavinsky genuinely enjoyed learning new things, even if it was, for all intents and purposes, 'useless' information.

"Exactly." Kavinsky smiled. "I've got the utmost confidence in you." To, you know, figure out or understand the technical stuff. "And I'm glad I could help."

"You always do this? Just go around helping random strangers?" Not that they're strangers anymore, not exactly. They've exchanged some light, personal information at this point.

"Nope. You're special." There were a lot of rumors about Kavinsky, back home, and he definitely had a reputation, but it wasn't as helpful.

"I wouldn't consider you a stranger, though. We might not be friends yet, but we're definitely acquaintances." And that was more than good enough for him when it came to helping someone out.

At least here, there are no rumors Max is aware of. She rolls her eyes to Kavinsky's special comment.

To the rest, she smiles and poses, "But are we strange acquaintances or friendly acquaintances?"

"Friendly." The answer is immediate. "Cause you seem really nice and-" he shrugged. "If you don't get sick of me, I could see us hanging out."

He could also see getting accused of being a bad influence or something--maybe not by Max, but by others. The worst part was, that wouldn't even be wrong. Sometimes he did make an effort to corrupt people. But only sometimes. He was feeling a smidge protective, in this case.

No, Max isn't going to accuse him of anything. So far, Kavinsky's been nothing but decent, and helped her.

"I'm not nice," she assures him with a chuckle. "I could definitely see us hanging, though." Just her way of saying she doesn't think she's going to get sick of him.

"Could've fooled me. How would you describe yourself, then?" He was still pretty sure she was nice. Nicer than a lot of other people he'd met, anyway. He also appreciated the implication that she wouldn't get sick of him. But really, only time would tell on that one.

"My 'people I'd hang out with' list is super short right now. It's like, you and this talking echidna." Which he knew sounded sort of batshit, but he didn't think there was a way to make it not sound batshit. "Not counting my girl." Because, of course, he'd hang out with Blue.

"Let's see," Max's eyes roll up as she lists her traits on one hand, "Sarcastic, angry and a little bit of a jerk," she mostly smiles when says all of that, even if it's not untrue, she's not completely serious. Mostly.

"But you just caught me when I was lost, and confused, so I'm vulnerable right now. That's all."

She nods her head. "Yeah, your list of friends is pretty small. You should work on that. What's a echidna, anyway?"

"Yeah, you sound exactly like my kind of person. Especially 'cause you're also nice, actually."

He couldn't help but laugh at the next bit though. "Oh man, don't say that. I'm-" he actually stopped for a moment to consider things, because he wasn't sure. "I don't know if I have a reputation for taking advantage of people in vulnerable positions but I don't want one, either."

"Yeah, I'm trying." It didn't help that he could be prickly and off-putting, but. He did what he could to make friends. "Echidnas are- uh- I think they're from Australia. Animals, of course. Except this guy isn't typical animal sized."

"Don't insult me!" Max says like she's wounded by this, then laughs about it. He'll find out, she can, also, be rather prickly. There just wasn't any reason to be, at the moment.

Max looks baffled for a second, then laughs with wide eyes and shakes her head.

"Well, you won't be getting a reputation. I'm not going to tell anyone if you don't. I don't want to have to admit I was lost and confused."

Another moment while she just listens and incorporates the information to memory. Yeah, this is totally new. "So...is he really big, or really small?"

He couldn't help but laugh, too; it was infectious. "Don't worry, I'm very transparent with my insults." Most of the time, anyway.

"Good. Cause you're only like, what, fourteen?" It was equal parts that he couldn't tell and was joking. "Most people are lost and confused when they get here, but I'm not telling anyone, either."

He considered that for a moment. "Well, echidnas are naturally small, I think. And he was like...not small. I don't know, we only talked over the network. Can't really tell when you're looking at someone on a screen."

"I would prefer to be insulted directly instead of indirectly. Just remember that."

She rolls her eyes, then assures Kavinsky, "Fifteen," as if that makes a huge difference. "Besides, you have a future girlfriend. No room for scandal."

Max's curiosity honestly grows more in relation to the echidna.

"What's his name? If he can talk, he's got a name, right?"

"I will remember that." He couldn't imagine, right now anyway, actually insulting her, though.

"Uh-huh." He was still grinning. Fifteen wasn't that much different than fourteen, really. "And yeah; you're right." Not that he hadn't been involved in scandals before, but- not here. No one here knew about them--except for Blue--and he'd like to keep it that way, to an extent.

"Of course, he has a name. Pretty sure he said it was Knuckles. Which, yeah, not traditional, but in terms of being badass? It's pretty high up there."

"You better," comes the non-threat threat.

She can read into that tone, and rolls her eyes again, but she remains smiling.

"Well, nothing happened. So no scandal."

There's more laughter. "Knuckles? I guess it's okay, but it's no Kavinsky or Max."

"I have a pretty good memory. Don't sweat it."

He was eighteen; he felt like he was old enough to consider her even more of a kid than he was. Which also made him feel a bit more protective, oddly enough. He knew most people could take care of themselves and he didn't plan on coddling her or anything, but. It didn't mean he wouldn't keep an eye on her when he could.

"Yeah. I try not to judge someone's name, but. Like- back home, my best friend's name is Prokopenko, and I've always thought that was pretty nice." He thought a lot of things about Proko were nice, but he was still mostly in denial about it.

Max wouldn't want to know what to do with coddling, but a little more protectiveness couldn't hurt.

Her eyes widen.

"That's a name I would want to shorten," she points out. Proko very much would likely be what she would end up calling him. "I guess names aren't something we always have a say in. Knuckles, though, that's a name to live up to."

He gave her a mock offended look before laughing. "Some people have trouble with it, I guess." And he usually stuck with Proko himself, but. "He was teaching me a bit of Ukrainian back home." And to say Kavinsky missed him would be an understatement.

"'Knuckles' sounds like the nickname you give to the guy who's always getting into fights." By which he meant, he liked it.

The mock offense just makes her smile, smugly, but Kavinsky's words cause her eyes to widen a little. "You good with languages, then?" She's not catching on how much he misses his friend, not yet.

"Exactly. So I'm wondering if he fights a lot," Max points out.

"Eh..." He made a so-so gesture with his hand. "I'm decent. You know I speak English. I also know Bulgarian, that little bit of Ukrainian, some Russian, and I'm taking Latin in school." Latin was probably the hardest out of all of those, being a dead language and all. But it was still interesting.

"Hmm. He might. I got the impression he's a heroic type, so he might be fighting to protect others," Kavinsky said. "Though he also said the animals where he's from are named after special attributes. So maybe he's got like, really badass knuckles."

She almost thinks it's cool, until he mentions Latin, then Max raises an eyebrow at him.

"Why Latin?"

Max nods her head. "A heroic echidna." She repeats the words like she knows she shouldn't believe any of this, but the truth is. "On an alien planet. After I was pulled out of an alternate dimension." She keeps nodding as she speaks.

She doesn't have a choice but to believe this. "I'm just going to have to meet him."

"Why not? It's a lot more interesting than French." And, Latin had the added bonus of Ronan Lynch, which...honestly probably had a lot to do with his choice.

He nodded along, as well. "Yup, that's the gist of it. Sounds insane, but you get used to that sort of thing after a while." Or, in Kavinsky's case, he'd been used to this sort of thing from the start.

"Right, a dead language makes way more sense than one you could get possible use out of," Max doesn't spare her sarcasm on that one, but does smile as she shakes her head.

Max pauses on that thought - just get used to it?

"I guess. First it sounds completely unreal, then it just becomes normal."

He grinned. He was absolutely not offended in the slightest. "Just you wait. Some day, some demonic book written in Latin will show up and when some fucknugget goes reading passages aloud with no idea what they're doing, you'll be glad someone who knows Latin is around to fix everything." He might have seen a handful of movies with that sort of premise. People always read the Latin aloud when they really shouldn't.

"Yup. I mean, it helps when you've been through weird shit to start with, cause it alters your idea of what 'normal' is, but-" he shrugged.

"Right. Second that impossible -" even Max stops when she says that, right, still possible, thanks alien planets and inter-dimensional serial killers, "scenario happens, I know exactly where to go. And I'll owe you a huge apology."

Kavinsky says but, and Max continues on with, "But this is still kinda weird," she points out with a smile, gesturing to the alien planet and destroyed buildings around them.
