[EVENT] - They arrived at Dusk
It has been quiet in Temba. The heroes brought in by the Agrii have found rest and recovery from the most recent storm, went on with their lives, the restoration of the city and on new explorations.
But everyone knows this quiet is only temporary.
Starting Friday the 15th of January, early in the morning, a noise can be heard all throughout the city. It's high-pitched and oddly rhythmic and not everyone may even be picking it up. Those that do may or may not find it increasingly irritating. And yet it will remain an itch that is hard to scratch without finding its source.
The noise prevails throughout the day, then dusk comes around and that pesky sound is about to be most everyone's least worry. For along with evening breaking, the city gets invaded by spider-like [ cw for spider-monster behind link ] monsters roughly the size of a wolf, numerous and very aggressive. They enter the city from virtually any side and their only goal seems to be to viciously attack anything in sight. In fact, every animal you will encounter acts unnaturally combative. Heroes, grab your weapons, summon your powers and fend them off - If you can.
But those large bugs may not be the only problem the current residents of Temba have to deal with: Some of their own are suddenly acting uncharacteristically aggressive themselves, attacking friend and foe alike. Who can help them, and how?
The relentless assault of the crawling menaces will last through the evening and night, but come dawn, all but very few stubborn stragglers will seek shelter in caves, the runs and their basements and even in the sewer system under the city itself. Does anyone dare to follow to hunt them down at their nest? What will they find?
Note: They will return the following evening and resume their misbehavior throughout the night but hide during the day. This will keep going until the event ends.
What will everyone do?
Try to find the source of the noise?
Fight the creepily crawling invasion?
Track them down to their very nest to face what lurks there?
Help those that have lost their rational sense?
Whatever your actions will be - Good luck!
Q&A
* Can everyone hear the noise?
This is left to your discretion. If you believe your character should or shouldn't perceive these sounds for whichever reason, there is your answer.
* What characters are affected by the sound?
This is an option aimed at characters with animal traits, attributes and affinities. Absolutely optional, of course.
* What about character pets?
We're sorry to inform you that, yes, those are affected by the noise as well.
* How do we help our friends/pets?
We recommend not hitting your pets and either find a way to temporarily lock them up, cast a sleep spell on them or do your best to appeal to their love and loyalty for you to make them return to their normal selves. Same might work for your friends, but in some cases... You may have to punch them first so they try to beat you up?
* About those spiders...?
They are, as mentioned, about the size of a wolf, physically stronger than a wolf and their bite burns once it stops hurting, yet isn't venomous. Their main advantage is their number combined with their raw strength.
* You mentioned going down into the sewers. What's up with that?
It's dark down there. And moist. And something might dwell down there... [ cue mysterious boss theme music playing softly in the background ]
* Now where does that agitating noise even come from?
Well... Remember there being a blinking blue light in the North-Western part of the city? Turns out a couple of people who shall not be named found and adjusted its settings and left it a blinking orange. The noise you hear now is emitted by the tower this light sits on top of. Feel free to investigate.
* Can we turn it off?
You can go and make use of the controls if you wish to do so, yes. In what that might result down the line, no one can tell you just yet.
* How can I opt out?
They are everywhere, aren't they. Well, rest assured, as before, the building housing the replicator remains a save haven. Somehow the monsters don't go there.
* When will the event end? + AC note
Unless the tower gets deactivated before, the event is scheduled to run until January 31st, when the tower will automatically reset. But as always backtagging is great and encouraged and since this event runs through the second half of the month, all posts made during it are eligible for AC for either January or February. Note that one post can only be used for one of both months.
EDIT
!! JANUARY WILL BE A CHECK-IN ONLY MONTH AC-WISE. February resumes with regular AC, but you can use posts/threads from both January and February. !!
* Anything else?
Feel free to ask below.

Obi-Wan has the ability to do mind control/befriend animals etc etc. Is it possible for him to influence the minds of some of these spiders/animals or anyone really that's being affected and kinda negate what the noise is doing while under his influence?
Such as would he be able to stop their aggression and perhaps make allies out of some of these creatures?

Everything but the spiders eh? Force resistant spiders! Intriguing! Thanks!

1. It is the noise that is causing people (and the animals) to go aggressive, that's what you mean by 'affected by the sound'? So animal-type people are going to tend to be aggressive/hear it early?
2. The spiders just leave? Is the why part of the mystery we're supposed to figure out, or is this something I didn't understand?
3. Assuming Tony had put a camera in the tower control room, would he have seen anything weird happen in there/something change about the countdown clock thing?

2: They will return the following evening. I... Forgot to add that, did I? My bad. They will be gone over the day and return once it's dark. Until the event ends and then- Depending on what people do either temporarily or entirely retreat/be gone.
3: Nothing at the tower changes visibly. The countdown hits a set of matching signs and stops there. Congratulations, you have found '0'!

But the general census is: If you believe it reasonable for your character to be affected, then it is.

Thanks!

maybe I've watched too much Kingdom), would there be any patterns they'd discover? Or is it strictly time of day that causes them to retreat?no subject
The result of that test will be simple enough: They are creatures of darkness and dislike the light. Bring a bright flashlight when you go after them, perhaps?

Good to know! Thanks!

Follow-up (Rukia-specific) question: I know the Agrii are rightly worried about Rukia's sword and that it'll disappear if she harms a fellow hero. Does that still apply if she uses it in this plot to help contain characters affected by the noise? Her natural tendency would be to try and avoid any lasting damage, considering it'll be pretty clear the affected individuals aren't acting of their own free will, but that's a far cry from no harm at all. XD

Plotting With Churby!
So, here are my initial plans for peeps.
Lauri-Ell has the security data point, thus a gun and her hammer. She's going to be fighting. Likely when others go to explore, she will volunteer to stay behind to defend those who will not be joining the expedition
if teddy or billy are going, she might need ordered or told it's okay for her to want to stay to protect the vulnerableTommy is super fast and can make things explode. He's going to be so fatigued by fighting in the siege, using so much of his powers when he hasn't in so long, he's probably going to need to collapse when things withdraw. He will request that people keep in touch with him because he wants to be able to rescue people fast if it's needed.
Reeve cannot fight. He's hiding in the building with the replicator, to help tend to people as needed.

tommy can hear it and it's driving him up the wallTony Plotting
Tony was part of the crew that caused the tower to do the nonsense, so he might be worth talking to if you're investigating the source. He has a camera set up in the tower control room.
He'll have Iron Man by the start of this, basically, so he'll be flying around and making a spectacle of himself. This could mean being helpful and doing some spider-wrangling, but it's also a new suit so it could mean some, uh, test flight shenanigans, if you're looking to make your life harder.

Plotting for Jon & Loki
Jon HATES spiders. Really does. He will freak out, get attacked by his mothcat (and rescued by Cal) and eventually head out towards the tower to try and fix the mess he apparently helped causing. Cayde may join him, possibly? Possibly Tony?
Also quite likely to get attacked by massive spiders. Boy hasn't gotten a new scar in a while.
Loki will defend himself when attacked, remains open to lend a hand and tag along with whatever lot heads into the sewers. He's annoyed enough by the spiders to be willing to assist in putting an end to them.

...and then maybe notice the countdown having run out and hatching the brilliant plan to return to the control room? Might call in Cayde along the way.
Though the noticing may happen after a few days, since I doubt they'll be at the little shed for the whole week. We will want a few days to watch and interact with the madness before making it worse~

So it would be like
day one: their cats go crazy. Jon, Cal and Tony are together by the end of the day, but mostly they think there's some emotional problem happening, they probably don't hear the noise?
night one: the spiders attack, some kind of shenanigans where I'm going to guess the goal is to mostly get away from them. I'm doubting this is where you want Jon to get really hurt? But that could be the reason they slow down a bit.
next week: Tony would be focused on making sure everyone is safe/not going feral, boots on the ground type (hanging out with Lauri). In the meantime, Jon could be trying to figure out the whys, and land on the tower?
So week two, Jon could get them back together like 'hey uh...we did this' so they could go try to clean up their own mess. And from there, who knows!

Seconding this timeline!
Some rough plottening for Cal, Cayde and Raph
Starting with Raphael, because he's going to be affected by the noise. Just what everyone needs, an angrier angry turtle? Haha... On the upside, upping the aggro on him just means he won't care about being ninja about things. Unfortunately that just means he won't be pulling punches. Completely open to however people will deal with him. Mind, he's a tough turtle.
Cal is going to help out Jon with his mothcat problems. He'll be sensing weird things in the Force but it'll be kind of hard to gauge in the daytime since only a few of their own would be affected by the noise. At least when the spider things come, he shouldn't be unarmed for long so he can help deal with those.
Cayde will probably suspect the weirdness is due to the tower since that's the most recent thing that's changed. I'm not sure if he'd pick up on the sound. Maybe it comes off like when your ears are ringing so you're not sure if it's just you or actual things. Once the bugs come out he'll know something's definitely up. Also, WHY IS IT ALWAYS BUGS. Probably tap the usual suspects to see if anything's happened at the control room thingy. Shoot and stab all the bugs. Rinse and repeat?

Echo Plotters (ROugh)
- Currently making a top-level Echo comment in the 'Jon almost gets eaten by spiders in the mall' log (LET'S BUST SOME SPIDERS???)
- Will set up a Network/Open Log thinger (maybe in a day or two) so that Echo is doing patrol/night watch shifts or something in between spoder attacs, yayyy
- Basically I can throw him into other stuff too and am open to stuff happening to him but I'm happy to handwave and/or keep him doing other things if participation gets too crowded?
Plus this lets me be lazyAlso I realize I should've made him find that Security Datapoint already >8| bweugh
